View of Callander Moraine and quarries in the vicinity in Callander.
View from above of quarries in Callander, photographed in early 2006. Callander Moraine and Drumdhu Wood can be seen in the centre of the picture. To its left is the quarry at Auchenlaich, which has since been landscaped. In the distance on the right are the disused workings at Cambusmore.

FRIENDS OF CALLANDER MORAINE was formed because so many people - locals as well as academics and visitors from far and wide - wanted the moraine to be saved. And because so many came on board and were not afraid to speak up, together we managed to succeed.

Since then the organisation has been on the back burner because we assumed that once the National Park got going in earnest it would automatically take care of Callander's environment where planning was concerned. Unfortunately, the National Park's Local Plan 2010-2015, opened up a whole new can of worms and demonstrated that we must never be complacent about Callander's environment.

Friends of Callander Moraine's focus remains the moraine and other glacigenic landforms in and around Callander. All of these landforms are important, not only in their own right but also because of the habitats they provide for our flora and fauna. The red squirrels on the moraine are a good example of this.

If you want to help us please do so by being our eyes and ears. Since the Park and Stirling Council changed their online planning information systems it has become incredibly difficult to keep on top of developments. Local knowledge tends to be the best way to find out what's going on, so if you hear of anything you think might be of relevance to our ongoing campaign do please contact us.

Thank you.
